Anthropomorphic vs. Purpose-Built End Effectors
Should a robot's hand look like a human hand, or just do the job as efficiently as possible?
An anthropomorphic end effector mimics the human hand's shape and joint structure — five fingers, roughly human proportions. A purpose-built end effector instead takes whatever shape best suits its intended tasks, without trying to resemble a human hand at all.
The case for anthropomorphic hands
Human environments and tools — door handles, keyboards, hand tools, vehicle controls — are designed around human hand dimensions and grip patterns, so a hand shaped similarly can use them without any special-case adaptation, which matters a lot for a general-purpose robot meant to operate in spaces built for people.
The case for purpose-built designs
A task-specific end effector can be simpler, cheaper, and more reliable than a general anthropomorphic hand for its specific job — which is exactly why most industrial robot arms still use simple grippers rather than humanlike hands. The anthropomorphic choice is really a bet that general-purpose versatility across many tasks and existing human infrastructure is worth the added complexity.
