Camera Placement: Why Humanoid Head Design Is a Sensing Problem

A robot's head shape is usually decided by where its cameras need to see, not aesthetics alone.

Where a robot's cameras sit determines its field of view, its ability to see its own hands during manipulation, and how much of the ground immediately in front of its feet it can actually see — three requirements that often pull in different directions.

The competing demands

Cameras mounted high and angled slightly down see the ground well but can lose sight of objects held close to the chest. Cameras mounted lower see manipulation tasks well but have a worse view of distant obstacles and of the floor immediately underfoot, which matters for step planning.

Common solutions

Many humanoids use multiple camera pairs at different heights and angles — a wider-view pair for navigation, a closer-focused pair or wrist-mounted cameras for fine manipulation — rather than trying to solve every sensing need with one head-mounted system.
