Robotics job postings use a set of fairly consistent titles across companies, but the specific responsibilities behind each can vary somewhat by organization — worth understanding the general pattern before you're deep into interviews.
The common categories
Controls engineers design and tune the algorithms that turn desired motion into actual joint commands — balance, walking, manipulation control. Perception engineers build the systems that let a robot understand its environment from sensor data — cameras, LiDAR, sensor fusion. Machine learning engineers focus on training and deploying learned models, often for perception or control policies specifically.

Mechatronics engineers work at the intersection of mechanical and electrical design — actuator integration, wiring, sensor mounting.
