Not every impressive robot demo is actually running on its own battery.
Robots in early development or research settings are often tethered to an external power supply via cable, or in rare experimental cases powered wirelessly over short range, rather than running on an onboard battery — a deliberate choice that simplifies testing, not a shortcoming.
Why tethering makes sense during development
Removing battery weight and battery-related engineering from the equation lets researchers isolate and test other systems (control software, mechanical design) independently, and avoids the risk of a battery failure compounding an already-risky early-stage physical test.
What to watch for in demo footage
A visible cable trailing from a robot in a demo is a straightforward, honest sign it's tethered — genuinely useful context, since a tethered demo says less about real-world battery-powered autonomy than an equivalent untethered one, without implying anything dishonest about the demo itself.
