3D-Printed vs. CNC-Machined Robot Frames

Two very different manufacturing approaches for the structural parts of a hobbyist robot.

3D printing (typically FDM with tough engineering plastics) lets hobbyists iterate on structural designs quickly and cheaply, producing complex geometries that would be difficult or expensive to machine conventionally. CNC machining cuts parts from solid metal or high-grade plastic stock, generally producing stronger, more precise, more heat-tolerant parts at higher cost and with less design freedom per part.

When 3D printing makes sense

Early prototyping, low-load structural parts, and anything you expect to redesign multiple times are strong candidates for 3D printing — the ability to iterate a design overnight is worth far more at this stage than the strength ceiling of the material.

When CNC machining is worth the cost

High-load structural joints, parts that see repeated mechanical stress, and final, stable designs you don't expect to keep revising are better candidates for CNC machining once your design has matured past the rapid-iteration phase.
