Testing and Debugging a Robot Safely

A few basic safety habits that prevent both hardware damage and personal injury during hobbyist testing.

A robot under active development is inherently unpredictable — bugs happen, and a bug in joint control code can send an actuator moving forcefully in an unexpected direction with essentially no warning.

Basic safety habits worth adopting

Testing new control code first at very low torque or speed limits, well below the actuator's full capability, before gradually increasing them once behavior is verified safe. Keeping hands and body clear of joint pinch points during any powered test, especially the first run of new code. Having an easily accessible, reliable emergency power cutoff within immediate reach at all times.

For legged robots specifically

A simple overhead support harness or gantry that catches the robot during a fall protects both the hardware and whoever's standing nearby during early walking tests, and is a common, worthwhile investment even for hobbyist-scale projects.
