Open-Source Humanoid Projects Worth Studying

You don't have to start entirely from scratch — a real body of open hobbyist and research work already exists.

Several open-source humanoid and bipedal robot projects have published mechanical designs, bills of materials, and control software publicly, giving newcomers a real starting point rather than a completely blank page.

What to look for in a project worth studying

Active documentation and an active community are often more valuable than raw technical sophistication — a well-documented, moderately capable open design you can actually understand and modify will teach you more, and get you further, than a technically impressive project with sparse documentation.

How to use them well

Studying an existing open design's actuator choices, joint layout, and control architecture — and understanding why those choices were made — is usually more valuable early on than copying the design outright, since you'll need to genuinely understand those tradeoffs once you inevitably adapt the design to your own constraints.
