Building a Robot Hand on a Hobbyist Budget

A dexterous hand is one of the hardest hobbyist subsystems to build well — here's a realistic approach.

A fully actuated, dexterous multi-fingered hand is genuinely one of the most difficult hobbyist robotics subsystems, given how much mechanism has to fit into such a small space — most hobbyists get better results starting simpler than they initially imagine.

A realistic starting point

An underactuated design — a small number of motors driving multiple fingers through a shared tendon or linkage mechanism, letting fingers passively conform to grasped objects — is far more achievable on a hobbyist budget and skill level than an ambitious fully independent multi-motor hand.

3D printing has changed what's accessible

3D-printed compliant mechanisms (single printed parts that flex at designed-in thin sections, acting as built-in joints) have made surprisingly capable hobbyist hand designs accessible without needing precision-machined metal parts or bearings at every joint.
