Boston Dynamics' original Atlas platform used hydraulic actuation, giving it exceptional dynamic capability — the parkour and backflip demonstrations that made it famous — at the cost of complexity, maintenance burden, and noise inherent to hydraulic systems.
Why the switch to electric
The newer, fully electric Atlas trades some peak dynamic capability for the efficiency, cleanliness, quieter operation, and dramatically simpler maintenance of electric actuation — a tradeoff that makes far more sense for a platform aimed at eventual commercial deployment than for one built primarily to showcase dynamic athleticism.
