How to Tell a Teleoperated Demo From an Autonomous One

Some practical, if imperfect, signals to look for when a company doesn't explicitly say.

Companies vary in how clearly they disclose whether a given demo shows autonomous operation or human teleoperation, which makes it useful to know some rough signals — none conclusive on their own, but suggestive together.

Signals worth watching for

Motion that's extremely smooth, fluid, and human-like in its subtlety often suggests teleoperation, since current autonomous policies still tend to produce somewhat more mechanical or hesitant movement patterns by comparison. A visible operator, headset, or control rig nearby is a direct tell where shown.

The most reliable signal

The most trustworthy source is simply the company's own explicit disclosure — reputable companies increasingly label demos clearly, and it's entirely fair to ask directly (via press materials, investor communications, or public statements) when it isn't specified, rather than relying purely on visual guesswork.
