Why Some Companies License Humanoid Platforms Instead of Building
Not every company entering the humanoid space is designing its own hardware from scratch.
Designing a humanoid robot from scratch — mechanical design, actuators, sensors, control software — requires enormous upfront investment and years of development. Some companies instead license or purchase an existing hardware platform and focus their own investment on software, AI, or a specific application layer built on top of it.
Why this can be a sound strategy
It lets a company enter the market faster and focus resources on whatever they believe is their genuine competitive advantage — often AI and software — rather than spreading investment thin across both hardware and software development simultaneously from day one.
The tradeoff
A company relying on a licensed platform has less control over its hardware roadmap and is dependent on the platform provider's own development priorities and reliability — a real strategic risk if the underlying platform's manufacturer changes direction, raises prices, or falls behind competitors.
