Reading Between the Lines of a Robot Demo Video

A practical checklist for watching humanoid robot footage with appropriately calibrated skepticism.

Robot demo videos are marketing material, produced to showcase a platform in its best light — genuinely informative, but worth watching with the same critical eye you'd apply to any other product marketing.

Questions worth asking

Is this autonomous or teleoperated, and is that clearly disclosed? How many takes might this have required (a single successful attempt says less than a demonstrated high success rate across many trials)? Is the environment controlled and rehearsed, or a genuinely unstructured, first-encounter setting?

A useful mental model

Treat an impressive demo as evidence that a capability is possible under favorable conditions, not evidence that it's reliable, general, or ready for real-world deployment — a distinction that separates informed enthusiasm from overreading a company's marketing.
