Battery Management Systems (BMS) Explained
The unglamorous electronics quietly keeping a robot's battery pack from destroying itself.
A battery management system continuously monitors and controls a battery pack's individual cells — tracking voltage, current, and temperature — and steps in to prevent unsafe conditions like overcharging, over-discharging, or excessive temperature that could damage the pack or create a safety hazard.
Cell balancing
Individual cells within a pack inevitably drift slightly out of balance with each other over repeated charge cycles. A BMS actively (or passively) redistributes charge between cells to keep them balanced, since an imbalanced pack loses usable capacity and ages unevenly, degrading faster than a well-balanced one.
Why it's treated as safety-critical
Lithium-ion batteries can enter thermal runaway — a self-reinforcing overheating reaction — if pushed outside safe operating conditions, so BMS design and testing is treated with the same rigor as other safety-critical robot subsystems, not as an afterthought bolted onto the battery pack.
