Fast Charging Tradeoffs for Robotic Batteries
Charging faster is almost always possible — the question is what it costs the battery over time.
Fast charging pushes more current into a battery pack in less time, reducing downtime — valuable for commercial robots that need to return to work quickly — but generates more heat and places more stress on the cells than a slower charge at the same total energy delivered.
The long-term cost
Repeated fast charging generally accelerates battery capacity degradation compared to slower charging, meaning a pack fast-charged constantly will typically need replacement sooner than one charged more gently — a real tradeoff between operational uptime today and battery replacement costs down the line.
How operators manage the tradeoff
Many commercial deployments use hot-swappable battery pools specifically to sidestep this tradeoff — charging spare packs slowly and gently on a rotation, rather than fast-charging the robot's active pack under time pressure, getting both fast turnaround and gentler treatment of each individual pack.
