Power Budgets: Where a Humanoid's Energy Actually Goes

Breaking down a robot's total power draw into its major consumers.

A humanoid's total power draw is the sum of several major subsystems, each contributing differently depending on what the robot is doing at any given moment — walking, standing, manipulating, or idle.

The major consumers

Actuators (motors and their controllers) usually dominate total power draw during active movement, especially locomotion. Onboard compute — running perception, control, and any AI models — is a smaller but non-trivial and fairly constant draw regardless of physical activity level. Sensors, communication hardware, and any active cooling systems round out the rest.

Why this breakdown matters for design

Understanding where power actually goes tells engineers where efficiency improvements will matter most — a small efficiency gain in actuator design, the largest power consumer, generally moves the needle on total runtime far more than an equivalent percentage improvement in a minor subsystem.
