Battery Safety: Thermal Runaway and How It's Prevented
The failure mode that battery engineers design almost everything else around avoiding.
Thermal runaway is a self-reinforcing chain reaction inside a lithium-ion cell where rising internal temperature accelerates chemical reactions that generate even more heat, potentially leading to fire — usually triggered by physical damage, overcharging, internal manufacturing defects, or extreme external heat.
How it's prevented at the pack level
Battery management systems monitor for early warning signs (unusual voltage or temperature patterns) and cut off charging or discharging before conditions become dangerous. Physical pack design often includes barriers between cells specifically to prevent a single failing cell from triggering a chain reaction across the whole pack.
Why robotics adds its own layer of risk
Beyond standard battery risks, a robot's battery pack is subject to physical impacts from falls and collisions that a stationary device wouldn't experience, which is part of why robotic battery enclosures and mounting are engineered with mechanical protection specifically in mind, not just electrical safety.
