Bimanual Manipulation: Why Two-Handed Tasks Are So Hard
Coordinating two arms doubles the hardware and multiplies the control complexity.
Bimanual manipulation — using both arms together on a single task, like holding a container steady with one hand while pouring with the other — requires coordinating two independent limbs against a shared physical object, where a mistake in either arm can affect what the other arm is doing.
Why it's more than two single-arm problems
When both hands hold the same rigid object, their motions are physically coupled — moving one hand necessarily moves the object the other hand is holding too, so the control system has to reason about the shared object's dynamics, not just plan each arm independently and hope they don't conflict.
Where it currently stands
Simple bimanual tasks (holding an object steady while the other hand works on it) are reasonably well handled today. More dynamic coordinated tasks — folding fabric, assembling two parts together, catching a tossed object with both hands — remain active research areas where robots are noticeably less capable and reliable than humans.
