Dexterous In-Hand Manipulation: Where the Field Actually Stands
Repositioning an object within your grip, without setting it down, is one of the harder open problems in robotics.
In-hand manipulation means reorienting or repositioning an object while it's still held, without placing it down first — like rotating a pen between your fingers to get it into writing position, something humans do almost without thinking.
Why it's so difficult for robots
It requires continuously coordinated finger motion, precise contact force control, and real-time tactile feedback all at once, with the added difficulty that the object's exact position relative to the hand becomes uncertain the moment it starts moving within the grip.
The honest current state
Research demonstrations (some using reinforcement learning trained extensively in simulation) have shown genuinely impressive specific in-hand manipulation feats. Reliable, general in-hand manipulation across arbitrary object shapes in real-world commercial settings, though, remains more research frontier than deployed capability as of 2026.
