The Difficulty of Deformable Object Manipulation (Cloth, Cables, Food)
Objects that don't hold a fixed shape break most of the assumptions rigid-object manipulation relies on.
Rigid object manipulation can generally assume an object's shape stays constant as it's moved. Deformable objects — cloth, cables, food items, bags — change shape continuously as they're handled, which breaks that assumption at every step.
Why this matters so much
A grasp plan or motion trajectory computed for a rigid object's known geometry doesn't transfer cleanly to something that reshapes itself mid-task, and the object's exact configuration after each interaction is genuinely hard to predict or fully observe with current sensing.
Real-world examples where this shows up
Folding laundry, handling cables during assembly work, and preparing food are all common examples cited in robotics research specifically because they involve significant deformable-object manipulation — and are correspondingly among the tasks still furthest from reliable robotic automation today.
