Parallel Jaw Grippers vs. Multi-Fingered Hands
The simplest possible gripper still beats a humanlike hand for a lot of real-world tasks.
A parallel jaw gripper has two flat fingers that close toward each other in a straight line — mechanically simple, cheap, and reliable for grasping objects of a predictable shape and size. A multi-fingered hand has several independently (or semi-independently) actuated digits, aiming for the versatility of a human hand.
Why parallel jaws still dominate industrial use
For known, repeatable objects — the dominant case in most warehouse and factory settings — a parallel jaw gripper is cheaper, more reliable, easier to control, and easier to maintain than a multi-fingered hand with dozens of times more moving parts.
Why humanoids still chase multi-fingered hands
General-purpose robots meant to operate in human environments encounter far more unpredictable object shapes than a factory arm typically does, and a versatile hand is what makes tasks like turning a doorknob, using a tool, or picking up an irregular object even possible. The cost is significantly more mechanical and control complexity for a still-developing capability.
