Building a Simple Bipedal Walker: Where Beginners Go Wrong

A surprising number of first bipedal walker attempts fail not because of an exotic technical problem, but because of a handful of common, avoidable mistakes made early in the design process.
The recurring mistakes
Underestimating how much torque ankle and knee joints actually need under real dynamic load (not just static standing) is extremely common. So is skipping simulation entirely and going straight to hardware, which turns every design mistake into an expensive, time-consuming physical rebuild instead of a quick software iteration.
A more forgiving path
Starting with a wider, more stable stance than a human's natural gait, testing extensively in simulation before committing to hardware, and building in a way to catch or support the robot during early testing (a simple gantry or harness) all meaningfully reduce how many expensive hardware failures a first attempt will rack up.
