Choosing an Actuator for a DIY Humanoid Joint

A practical framework for picking a motor and gearbox combination when you're not designing from scratch.

Most hobbyists don't design a custom actuator — they buy an off-the-shelf 'smart servo' or quasi-direct-drive module that bundles a BLDC motor, gearbox, encoder, and controller into one unit, communicating over a simple serial or CAN bus protocol.

What to check on a datasheet

Continuous torque (not just peak/stall torque, which you can't sustain), operating voltage and current draw, communication protocol and update rate, and physical mounting dimensions all matter more than raw specs in isolation. A unit rated for double the torque you need at double the price and weight isn't automatically the better choice.

A realistic starting point

For hip and knee joints on a small-to-mid-size hobbyist biped, many builders start with commercially available quasi-direct-drive servo modules in the 6:1 to 9:1 reduction range rather than harmonic-drive units, mainly because they're cheaper, easier to source, and more forgiving of the falls a prototype will inevitably take.
