Planetary Gearboxes in Humanoid Joints: Tradeoffs and Failure Modes
The oldest, simplest way to gear down a motor, and still a common choice where cost and robustness matter more than compactness.
A planetary gearbox arranges small 'planet' gears orbiting a central 'sun' gear inside a fixed outer ring gear, distributing load across multiple contact points rather than one — which makes it inherently more robust to shock than a single gear pair, and cheaper to manufacture than a harmonic drive at comparable torque.
The tradeoffs
Planetary gearboxes have more backlash than harmonic drives at a given price point, and achieving very high single-stage reduction ratios usually means stacking multiple planetary stages, which adds length and cuts into efficiency. That makes them a common choice for joints where cost matters more than ultimate compactness or precision.
Failure modes
The most common failures are tooth wear from cyclic loading, bearing wear in the planet carriers, and lubricant breakdown from heat — all things that show up gradually as increasing backlash and noise rather than sudden failure, which is why vibration and backlash monitoring are common in maintenance programs for commercial deployments.
