How Robots Detect an Impending Fall Before It Happens
The best fall recovery is the one that never has to happen because the robot caught the problem early.
Fall detection works best when it happens before the robot is actually falling — by the time a humanoid's torso has tipped past a certain angle with enough angular velocity, physics limits how much a controller can do about it.
The signals that matter
Controllers watch for the center of mass drifting toward the edge of the base of support (the area enclosed by the feet), sudden unexpected torque readings suggesting an external push, and IMU-measured tilt rate exceeding what a normal walking gait would produce.
What happens next
Once early warning signs cross a threshold, the controller can shift strategy — take a quick recovery step, widen the stance, or extend an arm for support — well before a full fall becomes unavoidable. Genuinely unrecoverable falls still happen, which is why robots undergoing testing are usually rigged with an overhead safety tether or operate over soft flooring during development.
