Foot Pressure Sensors and Ground Contact Detection

Knowing exactly when and where a foot touches the ground is more important than it sounds.

Pressure sensors embedded in or under a robot's foot detect the moment of ground contact and how load is distributed across the sole — information a walking controller uses continuously to time each step and shift weight correctly.

Why exact timing matters

A walking gait plans each step assuming contact happens at a specific, predicted moment. If the ground is slightly higher or lower than expected (a curb, a slope, thick carpet), pressure sensing detects the actual contact moment so the controller can adjust in real time rather than following a plan built for flat, predictable ground.

Alternatives and complements

Some designs infer contact indirectly from ankle force/torque sensors or from sudden changes in joint torque rather than dedicated foot pressure sensors, trading a bit of precision for one less component to maintain. Many production robots use both, treating dedicated pressure sensing as a faster, more direct confirmation layered on top of force-based inference.
