Getting Started With a DIY Humanoid Robot: What You Actually Need

Building a humanoid robot from scratch is a genuinely multidisciplinary project — mechanical design, electronics, and software all have to come together, and it's worth being honest with yourself about which of those three you're weakest in before you start.

The realistic starting list

A CAD tool for mechanical design (many good free or low-cost options exist), a small set of actuators sized to your budget and target scale, a single-board computer or microcontroller for control, basic power electronics, and — often underestimated — a realistic plan for how you'll test safely without destroying expensive parts on early falls.

The most common early mistake

Many first-time builders start designing an overly ambitious full-body humanoid immediately, rather than starting with a smaller subsystem (a single leg, an arm) to validate their actuator choices, control approach, and mechanical design before committing to a full build.
