The research era

Honda's ASIMO program, running from the late 1990s through the 2010s, was for years the most publicly visible humanoid research effort, demonstrating walking, stair climbing, and basic interaction long before commercial viability was a realistic near-term goal. Boston Dynamics' hydraulic Atlas, developed initially with DARPA-era research funding, became famous for its dynamic athleticism.

The commercial acceleration
