Robotics toys and kits marketed for children vary enormously in actual educational value — some genuinely teach real engineering and programming concepts, while others are closer to a pre-programmed toy with limited scope for a child's own genuine learning and creativity.
What to look for
Kits that let a child actually build and reconfigure the physical robot, not just operate a fixed, unmodifiable one, generally teach more real engineering intuition. Age-appropriate programming interfaces (visual, block-based coding for younger children, text-based coding for older ones) matter a great deal for whether a child can genuinely engage independently versus needing constant adult help.
A reasonable expectation to set
A good educational robotics kit should hold a child's interest well beyond the first day of novelty — kits with an active library of ongoing projects and challenges tend to sustain engagement considerably longer than one with a single fixed build and no room to grow into more advanced projects.
