Soft Robotics Grippers: When Compliance Beats Precision
Sometimes a gripper that can't be controlled precisely is exactly what you want.
Soft grippers are built from flexible, compliant materials — often pneumatically or hydraulically actuated silicone structures — that deform to match an object's shape passively, rather than using rigid fingers precisely positioned by a controller.
Where they excel
Handling delicate, irregularly shaped, or fragile items — produce, for example — is a classic use case, since a soft gripper naturally distributes grip force across an object's surface without needing to know its exact geometry in advance, and is far less likely to bruise or crush something fragile than a rigid gripper misjudging its force.
Where they fall short
Soft grippers generally can't apply the high, precise forces needed for tasks like inserting a part with tight tolerances, and most designs today are simpler two- or three-lobed grippers rather than fully dexterous, multi-fingered hands — genuinely useful for a specific class of tasks, not a general-purpose replacement for rigid hands.
