Schaft
A DARPA Robotics Challenge standout that Google acquired, then quietly shut down in 2018.
Schaft's robot won the DARPA Robotics Challenge trials in 2013 before Google (later Alphabet) acquired the company — one of a wave of robotics acquisitions Google made in that period, alongside Boston Dynamics.
Alphabet shut the project down in 2018 without a commercial product, but former Schaft engineers and research have influenced later humanoid efforts across the industry, a common pattern with early, well-funded research bets that don't ship.
