What "6-Axis Force/Torque Sensor" Actually Measures
Unpacking a spec-sheet term that shows up constantly but is rarely explained plainly.
A 6-axis force/torque sensor reports six independent numbers at once: force along the X, Y, and Z axes, and torque (twisting moment) around each of those same three axes — a complete description of the mechanical load being applied at that single point.
Why all six matter
A simpler single-axis force sensor only tells you how hard something is pushing along one direction. Real-world contact — gripping an oddly-shaped object, a foot landing at an angle — rarely applies force cleanly along one axis, so a full 6-axis reading is needed to reconstruct what's actually happening at the contact point.
How it's built
Most 6-axis F/T sensors use strain gauges arranged around a specially machined structure that flexes in measurably different ways depending on the direction and type of load applied, then combine those individual strain readings mathematically to separate out all six force and torque components.
