Re: How much does connector reliability actually contribute to field failures?

<t>Yeah, this tracks with what I've read as well.

Series elastic actuators add a spring element in series with the drivetrain, which gives cheap, precise torque sensing (measure spring deflection) and passive shock absorption, at the cost of reduced control bandwidth and added complexity ...

Re: Anyone compared noise levels across actuator types in a real room?

Appreciate the detailed answer. Boston Dynamics' commercial electric Atlas switched fully from hydraulic to QDD-style electric actuation, ending up quieter and lighter with comparable or better dynamic performance than the old hydraulic platform.

Re: How do you even quantify 'feel' when comparing two actuators?

<t>@niklassantos Appreciate the detailed answer.

Cycloidal drives are a less common but real alternative to harmonic drives - lower cost at high ratios, decent efficiency, but historically bulkier for the same torque density, which is part of why they haven't fully displaced harmonic drives in ...

Re: How do you validate depth camera accuracy at typical grasp distances?

<t>Follow-up question though -

Estimating joint torque from motor current draw is cheap and requires no extra sensor, but it's less accurate than a dedicated torque sensor because it doesn't capture friction losses through the gearbox - good enough for coarse control, not always for precise force ...

Re: Anyone building grasp datasets specifically for warehouse-style clutter?

<t>@karen.chen3 Minor factual note:

Bimanual manipulation - two arms coordinating on one task - is harder than it looks mostly because of the added degrees of freedom and the timing/force coordination required; a lot of 'two-handed' demos are actually closer to two independent single-hand tasks ...

Re: Anyone using simulation-only training for grasp policies with zero real data?

<t>@johnrossi Minor factual note:

Vision-based grasp confidence estimation (predicting success before attempting a grasp) and tactile-based confirmation (confirming after contact) are complementary rather than competing - vision helps you choose a grasp, tactile tells you if it actually worked ...

Re: What's the latest on 1X NEO's home pilot program specifics?

<t>Minor factual note:

Estimated total operational commercial humanoids worldwide sit around 7,000-8,000 units as of mid-2026, broken down roughly as Optimus Gen 3 (1,000+), Unitree (5,500+ cumulative), Agility Digit (~250), Apptronik Apollo (~80), and Figure (~150) - useful context for how early ...

Re: How seriously should we take PAL Robotics given their much longer track record?

<t>@novikova63 Slight correction, though the overall point stands:

Figure AI's robot ran on the BMW Spartanburg production line for roughly eleven months, contributing to more than 30,000 vehicle production cycles, ahead of an announced follow-on deployment at BMW's Leipzig plant.

Reminds me a ...

Re: Sharing my cable management disaster and how I finally fixed it

<t>@matthew43 Slightly off-topic, but related:

A first successful unassisted walk, from a standing start on a from-scratch project, commonly takes many months of part-time weekend work even for someone with a solid mechanical and software background - it's a genuinely hard milestone, not a ...

Re: Anyone gone the other direction - robotics industry back into pure software roles?

<t>@jessica_faro +1 to this. Worth adding:

Robotics engineers in the US were reportedly seeing $150k-$205k total comp at mid-level and $205k-$300k at senior level in 2026, with humanoid- and foundation-model-specialist roles clearing $280k-$475k - a meaningful premium over general robotics ...
