Adding battery capacity extends runtime, but every added cell also adds weight that every joint in the robot then has to move, accelerate, and support — meaning battery capacity isn't a free lever to pull for more runtime, it's a genuine tradeoff against overall mobility and efficiency.
The diminishing-returns problem
Past a certain point, adding more battery capacity actually reduces net runtime, because the energy needed to move the extra battery weight around exceeds the extra energy that weight stores — a real, physics-driven limit on how much runtime improvement is achievable through battery size alone.
Why this shapes overall design priorities
This is a major reason the industry invests heavily in actuator and motor efficiency, structural weight reduction, and smarter energy-aware control software — all of which extend effective runtime without the diminishing returns that come from simply adding more battery mass.
